Who are you/What do you study?
Vanessa, 20 – I come from the beautiful wine region Rheinhessen (which is not (!) in Hessen, but Rheinland-Pfalz).
I study Anglistik as my major and my minor is Sign Language.
Who or what inspired you to start making music?
My grandpa. He’s a musician himself and started teaching my siblings and me how to play the guitar. At the beginning, he only taught us to play classical guitar but when I was around 12 years old he gave me a book with lots of songs to sing and play basic chords to.
My songwriting is mainly inspired by Hozier, if you haven’t listened to his album – you should. He writes in a very poetic way, which I like.
How long have you been playing an instrument or singing?
The first instrument I played was the recorder. Yeah I know everyone did at school.. but I did it kind of legit. I started at 6 years old (until I was 14.. became kind of uncool then) and played in an orchestra where we would play classical pieces (Händel, Bach,..).
As I mentioned, my grandpa taught me to play the classical guitar, but I haven’t played in a long time. I only use it to write songs and to accompany my singing now.
I also play the Ukulele (a little bit).
I started singing at 12, joined my school’s choir and started singing solos, taking singing lessons, joined a really pathetic school band and with 15 a really cool jazz band (well, as cool as jazz bands can get).
Now I’m here. Anyone wanna start a band?
How would you describe your style?
Tough question. I don’t know, I don’t follow a specific style – not intentionally. Maybe just pop? If you know what it would be identified as, please tell me.
I was almost struck by lightning once.
Because of that, I now have superpowers.
Okay only one of those is a fact.
