Life at the border is lonely. I survived that night, or at least some parts of me did. But ever since then, I felt it moving in the thicket, tracking me, somewhere beyond the screens of green and brown, a pulse that tried to match my own. Father once said: “We are the beasts and whatever lives down there fears us. Our job is to keep it that way.” So, I stayed at the ridge, a guardian at the threshold, asserting my dominance.
