*tba presents: Katia Wort

‘Singing is breathing, singing is ecstasy, singing is solace, singing is an embrace, singing is processing. It is the only time besides sleeping that I don’t spend thinking.’ – Katia Wort on what singing means to her

Singing is Katia’s great passion in life and she is one of the acts you can marvel at during *tba presents next Thursday. Sara and I meet Katia Wort on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at the Anglarium. Despite its noisy atmosphere we were able to have a deep and meaningful conversation with her.

But who is Katia?

Katia Wort (her stage name) was born in Siberia, she studied Romance languages with a focus on Italian and Portuguese – and some Spanish on the side – at the University of Hamburg and wrote her bachelor thesis in linguistics last semester. Now she’s finally diving into the world of words and as she says ‘her last name speaks for itself’.

At the moment she only lives for her music – which has been strengthened by the arrival into the world of her first self composed tracks. And ever since this life-changing event she’s been putting all her emotions into her lyrics.

In our conversation it becomes apparent just how much music means to Katia; to her music is something vital and very intuitive – as she says ‘the words sort of just fall down from the sky’ and whenever that happens she needs to write them down or record them on her phone immediately.

Who has influenced her to become a musician?

Most notably her grandfather from whom she claims to have gotten all her talents. She’s always been surrounded and taken by music – at the moment she’s smitten by Herbert Grönemeyer’s new tunes.

In general she’s a fan of German music which might explain that her own lyrics are all written in German.  At *tba presents she presents four new self-written songs.

*tba presents is one of her first major gigs and she hopes for many more opportunities to present her words and tunes. Katia’s personal goal is to write an entire album by the end of the year.

Katia Wort is just starting out but we are 100% convinced big things are on the horizon for her.

*tba is proud to have her on board for the second edition of *tba presents and we’re excited for her performance!
